About Clarens

Clarens is a small hamlet situated in the Eastern Free State, South Africa. Clarens is renowned for its spectacular sandstone cliffs, mountainous scenery and sandstone buildings. The village is an artist’s mecca with 17 resident artists and 19 art galleries. This picturesque village bestows a european sense of being overseas.

Numerous restaurants and shops are there to fulfill almost anyone’s needs. A short 20kms drive takes you to the Golden Gate Reserve where you can see wildlife such as blesbuck, wildebeest, zebra, birds of prey (in particular the Cape Vulture and the Bearded Vulture). Clarens is a haven for the adventure seeker – white water rafting, horse back riding, quad bike treks, abseiling, mountain bike tracks, 4×4 routes and hiking plus a new 18 hole golf course.

A more leisurely activity is offered through fly fishing and star gazing – one of the best views of the southern night sky in South Africa.
